My Daily Minute
UCW (United Church Women)
The UCW of Norval United meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month. (Meetings currently on hold) We share Jesus’ teaching and love for one another. We strive to be informed and learn for the better good of each other and the world around us. We raise money to give to groups within the community and around the world. The UCW participates in our Christmas Bazaar, Chicken BBQ and the ecumenical World Day of Prayer service.
The UCW mission is “To unite the women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and be a means by which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, friendship and service”
A group of men meet Thursday mornings at 9:30 am for an hour to talk about the news, the world, faith, life and God. Currently we are meeting online through Zoom. New men are always welcome to join in the discussion. Contact George Smith, email@example.com
Our outreach team is a small group that works to determine how we can better support our wider community. From camp scholarships to providing food for families in need to organizing Christmas hampers and more If you have any questions about how you can help please contact Jen Auger, firstname.lastname@example.org .
Meeting on the second Monday of each month from 2:00 – 3:30 pm. The Prayer Purls knit prayer shawls to send to people in need of a little extra love and support. Join for knitting and fellowship. Contact Beverley Wilson for more information, email@example.com
There are three different grief groups that run out of Norval United church, with support from Jones Funeral Home. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org to connect with the group leaders.
Walking Through Grief: This is an 8 week pre-registered program that runs three times throughout the year. Participants watch a DVD, share in discussion, and find support from others who are grieving.
Parent Grief Group: This group is for those dealing with the death of a child. It could be a young child or an old child, a recent loss or a loss from years ago. The grief of a parent is unique. Coming together with those who know what you are going through can be healing. Meetings are on the last Tuesday of the month, 7:00 – 9:00 pm (excluding July and August)
Open Grief Support Group: This monthly group provides a safe, comforting environment for support on an ongoing basis. Our group is open for anyone to attend whenever they wish. There is no expectation of attending each group meeting. Come speak freely about your own feelings and find support from others who are feeling the same as you.
Meetings are on the 4th Monday of the month, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm.
When the COVID-19 pandemic began and we started worshipping online, one of the things everyone missed was singing together. We started with only having piano accompaniment in our worship, while worked for a bit, the voices were missed. Thus began the Norval United Virtual Choir.
Under the guidance of Tom Auger, members record their voices at home each week. Through the magic of technology, the voices and Alan’s accompaniment are put together to provide music for both our online and in person services.
We are always looking for more voices. If you would like to join, contact Tom Auger by email.
Seniors’ Hymn Sing
Part of Norval United Church’s outreach ministry includes monthly visits to three senior’s residences to provide a hymn-sing and worship. We visit Mountainview Residence on the second Wednesday, Extendicare on the third Sunday and the Bennett Centre on the fourth Wednesday of each month. All services are at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
The time spent with folks at these two facilities is a blessing; for us, for the residents who can communicate their appreciation, as well as those who are unable to speak or sing.
Anyone interested in helping lead or participate in bringing this important ministry to our local seniors would be most welcome to join us at any service. Contact Elaine van Doorn for more information, email@example.com
The prayer group meets every Sunday morning at 9:15 to 9:45 before our worship service. Anyone is welcome to join in prayer for individuals, our church and the world. Contact Marilyn Smith for more information, firstname.lastname@example.org
Bill Laidlaw Memorial Fund and Golf Tournament
The Bill Laidlaw Memorial Fund honours a great man of Norval United Church and of the local farming community by offering financial support to Children’s and Youth Programs and Youth Leadership Development at Norval United Church and in the Halton Hills Community.
Funds raised at our annual Bill Laidlaw Memorial Golf Tournament have allowed us to offer financial assistance to our Outreach Committee for community youth support, to our own Children & Youth Programs, to the Georgetown Canadian Tire Jump Start Program, for scholarships to our NUC graduating youth, and also to both the Georgetown District High School and Christ the King High School, as well as the Johnathan Campbell Youth Leadership Award. Norval United Church is proud to carry on the memory of Bill Laidlaw through this memorial fund. Youth are a very important component to the life of our church, our community and our future.
Annual Chicken BBQ
The first Annual Chicken BBQ took place in 1967. It is a great community event that has been hosted at various locations. We are excited to be offering this event in our new building. The BBQ typically happens at the end of May. Come join us for some great fellowship and some delicious food including mouthwatering BBQ’d chicken, our world famous potato salad and, of course, a delicious piece of pie.
This year’s BBQ is a drive thru event on May 28th. You can find out more information about this year’s event on Saturday May 28th here.
Join us on Canada Day for a BBQ, fireworks and fun. This is a great family event and loved by all who attend. Many families have made this a yearly tradition. Stay tuned for more information in June.
