Celebrating 100 Years of The United Church of Canada

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of The United Church of Canada on June 10, 2025, Norval United welcomed visitors and friends from Hillcrest United, St. Andrew’s United, St. John’s United, and beyond for a joyful worship service on Sunday, June 8, Pentecost Sunday. Our sanctuary was filled to capacity, with the “garage doors” opened to accommodate extra seating, and many others joining us online (thanks NUC tech team!). Two special anniversary banners were unveiled in our gathering space and will continue to mark this milestone throughout the year.

Guest preacher Dr. Betty Pries both inspired and challenged us with her message. All four congregations participated in leading the service, and music lifted our spirits through the gifts of Norval’s Alan Forde, a combined choir of over 30 people led by Mark Peterson (Music Director, St. John’s) and Matt Morrison, and a beautiful sung blessing from Carolyn Maule and Katharine Krul.

During our theme conversation with children and youth, Rev. Heather Power and Rev. Brenna Baker reflected on our own celebrations, the United Church’s centennial, and the wonder of Pentecost. One of our wise young participants suggested we sing “Happy Birthday” to the church—a fantastic idea that brought joy to all! Bubbles floated through the air, symbolizing the Spirit moving among us then and now.

Our loose offering raised $607 in support of the Townsend Smith Foundation and their work to build a much-needed local hospice. Thank you to all who also contributed online in celebration of this meaningful occasion.

And of course, what celebration would be complete without cake and special refreshments?

A heartfelt thank you to everyone from Norval who made this day possible—our dedicated volunteers, staff team, and Worship Team—and to all who joined us, both in person and online, to celebrate this historic and Spirit-filled day. It was truly one to remember!
